7.7 Pay Deductions and Setoffs

The law requires that FNU make certain deductions from every employee’s compensation. Among these are Social Security, Medicare, and applicable federal, state and local income taxes.

FNU offers programs and benefits beyond those required by law. Eligible employees may voluntarily authorize deductions from their paychecks to cover the costs of participation in these programs. Pay setoffs are pay deductions taken by FNU, usually to help pay off a debt or obligation to FNU or other agencies, such as Child Support, IRS, etc.

Garnishment/Child Support. When an employee’s wages are garnished by a court order, the University is legally bound to withhold the amount indicated in the garnishment order from the employee’s paycheck. The University will, however, honor federal and state guidelines which protect a certain amount of an employee’s income from being subject to garnishment.

If you have questions concerning why deductions were made from your paycheck or how they were calculated, please ask your supervisor or the Human Resources Department.
