4.5 Faculty as a Leader

The professional educator is one of the most important resources for a student. Faculty are mentors, educators, and role models. Faculty should be cognizant of their ability to influence the academic and personal success of a student. The nature of the faculty/student dynamic is one of great importance; therefore, all FNU faculty are encouraged to be proactive in their mentoring and leadership.

FNU offers several leadership principles to guide faculty:

  1. Lead with integrity.
  2. Be authentic.
  3. Actively listen.
  4. Acknowledge mistakes as learning opportunities.
  5. Be positive with praise and reserved with criticism.
  6. Be decisive, but well informed.
  7. Be collaborative and collegial with colleagues.
  8. Develop advocacy for students and colleagues.
  9. Maintain composure, especially in crisis.
  10. Seek to understand the needs and challenges faced by students.
  11. Commit, every day, to the development and growth of students.
  12. Embrace and encourage the diversity inherent in students and faculty.
