Federal Work Study
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides part-time job opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for educational expenses. FWS is a federally funded program administered by Florida National University as part of a student’s financial aid package. Students are encouraged to find work that is related to their course of study or that benefits the community.
Students interested in participating in on-campus and community service employment visit the Career Services Office to inquire about open positions. Career Services asks students if they are interested in Federal Work Study (FWS), and if the student is interested the Financial Aid Office reviews their eligibility (including confirming the student has unmet need) and awards the student if eligible.
A student’s FWS award amount is based on the number of hours the student is available to work (not to exceed 29 hours per week), the pay rate, and the student’s unmet need. Students are not permitted to work during their scheduled class times, which is considered in determining their hours available to work.
Students receive their FWS wages in the form of a paycheck. The Financial Aid Office and the Payroll Office work collaboratively to ensure students do not earn FWS wages in excess of their award amount.
The federal share of FWS awards made to students may not exceed 75% of the total FWS awards made by the University, and the University therefore matches 25% of the total FWS awards. FNU covers the payroll of FWS students using 100% institutional funds and then reimburses itself no more than 75% of the payroll using federal funds.
