4.5 Faculty as a Leader
The professional educator is one of the most important resources for a student. Faculty are mentors, educators, and role models. Faculty should be cognizant of their ability to influence the academic and personal success of a student. The nature of the faculty/student dynamic is one of great importance; therefore, all FNU faculty are encouraged to be proactive in their mentoring and leadership.
FNU offers several leadership principles to guide faculty:
- Lead with integrity.
- Be authentic.
- Actively listen.
- Acknowledge mistakes as learning opportunities.
- Be positive with praise and reserved with criticism.
- Be decisive, but well informed.
- Be collaborative and collegial with colleagues.
- Develop advocacy for students and colleagues.
- Maintain composure, especially in crisis.
- Seek to understand the needs and challenges faced by students.
- Commit, every day, to the development and growth of students.
- Embrace and encourage the diversity inherent in students and faculty.
